When I first arrived in Zurich, I told myself — “Okay, if I’m going to live in Switzerland, I have to experience the mountains properly.” But how to find my female hiking friends in Zurich? This is not just from postcards or Instagram reels, but with my own breathless legs and sweaty forehead, and to connect with anotehr soul. The only problem? I was new here and didn’t want to hike alone.

I want to find other girls who can build up new friendship with me in Zurich.

So I gathered a little courage and posted in a local community group:

“Anyone up for a Saturday hike? Pace: conversational. Goal: views and cheese.”

To my surprise, three girls replied. All of them, just like me — new to Switzerland, slightly lost, curious, and craving connection.

The Hike That Changed Everything

We met at the train station, a bit shy at first — strangers with backpacks and bananas. But by the first uphill section, we were already laughing about hiking etiquette:

• “Is it rude to breathe this loudly?”

• “At what point do we stop pretending we’re not dying?”

And just like that — the awkwardness disappeared.

We hiked through wildflower fields, stopped for photos every five minutes, sang random songs in between gasps for air, and at the top, shared chocolate like we’d known each other forever.

Afterwards, we grabbed dinner back in the city — hair messy, faces sunburned, hearts warm.

And Somewhere Between the Trail and the Train Ride Back…

…I realized I wasn’t just collecting scenery.

I was collecting my female friendship through this hiking experience.

One of the girls has now become my person here — someone I can message at 7am saying, “Wanna catch sunrise in the Alps?” and she’ll say yes.
