How We Found Friends in Zurich - Our Tips of Finding Your New Friendship

Updated: Nov 3

Moving to Zurich

Let’s be real — moving to Zurich can feel a little overwhelming at first. It’s a beautiful city, but when you’re new here, no matter if you are one of the expat women, students who just start your life here, or just a girl who just move here and wants to find your women community in Zurich, you quickly realize that making friends as an adult isn’t always easy. We’ve all been there — standing in a room full of strangers, wondering how to actually start building a social life.

How we find friendship in Zurich- Our true story

So here’s how we did it — this is the story of our founding members of SHECONNECTS, we here share with you our real stories of finding connection, laughter, and belonging in Zurich.

girls finding female friendship in zurich

Alissa — Sports and University classes = Instant Connections

Alissa started joining university sports classes and playing tennis. At first, it was just about exercising, but soon she realized how friendly and open people were. After a few classes, she started grabbing coffee with teammates and found friends who shared her energy for staying active. Sports make it so easy to bond — you don’t even have to talk much; you just do things together

Nicole — Erasmus Meet-ups and Spontaneous Chats

Nicole began going to Erasmus meet-ups to meet new people — and they were full of internationals who were in the exact same situation. She started chatting with people from all over the world, and before she knew it, those small conversations turned into real friendships. Sometimes all it takes is showing up and saying “hey” to the person next to you.

Vivian — Dancing Her Way into Friendship

Vivian found her circle through dance — salsa, bachata, Brazilian zouk, and pole dance. Dance classes are full of good vibes, music, and people who just love to move. After class, everyone often goes out together for drinks or socials, and that’s how real connections start. For her, dancing wasn’t just about learning steps — it became a way to find her people in Zurich.

Vasil — UZH Classes and Sports Brought Community

Vasil also met friends through UZH group classes and sports sessions. When you start seeing the same faces every week, it gets easier to talk, laugh, and hang out after. It’s funny how showing up regularly for something you enjoy can quietly build your social circle over time.

We know that when you just arrived here in Zurich, even finding new connections in the university can be hard, so here we also provide our partner platform UZH Geoguessr which supports (new) students to improve their orientation & gain more knowledge about the University of Zürich.

Our Take-Away: Doing What You Love Together Helps You Find Your People

The truth is — it’s way easier to make friends when you’re doing something you already enjoy. Whether it’s dancing, tennis, hiking, or even a language class, shared passions create natural connections. And the best part? You meet people from all over the world who are open-minded, curious, and also trying to make this city feel like home.
